When the .NET gTLD was initially started in 1985, together with the first domains on the Internet, it was supposed to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure entities. Since there were no particular prerequisites about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were purchased and used for various purposes and by a large number of people. This TLD is a wonderful alternative to dot COM, especially if the desired domain with the latter TLD is not available for registration.

Transfers are available for all domains, which are at least sixty days old, provided that they are unlocked and that you have taken an EPP transfer authorization key – security measures established by the Registry organization to prevent unauthorized transfers. You can easily modify the WHOIS contact details of the domain through your Control Panel tool, or, if you don't wish this information to be visible at all, you can get a Whois Privacy Protection service, so nobody will be able to get your actual contact info.

The dot NET top-level domain name extension supports internationalized names, so you can pick whether you want to focus on a certain country or territory using a domain name in the regional language, or the global Internet community – using a generic English name.
